A former FBI informant named Alexander Smirnov has been charged with lying about President Joe Biden and his son Hunter’s connections to a Ukrainian energy company called Burisma. Smirnov has been indicted on charges of making a false statement and creating a false record. He was arrested at an airport in Las Vegas after returning to the US from abroad. If convicted, Smirnov could face up to 25 years in prison.

Smirnov claimed that Hunter Biden used his father’s name to solicit bribes from Burisma, and that the company paid both Hunter and Joe Biden $5 million each in 2015 or 2016. These claims were seized upon by Republicans to accuse the Biden family of corruption and justify an impeachment inquiry into the president. However, Hunter Biden’s lawyer has stated that the indictment vindicates their previous statements that these allegations were conspiracy theories fueled by political agendas.

Hunter Biden sat on the board of Burisma from 2014 to 2019, during which time Joe Biden was vice president. Last year, Hunter Biden was charged with tax evasion and firearms-related charges.
