Fritzl kept his daughter locked in his basement from 1984 to 2008 and had seven children with her. He was sent to prison for his whole life in 2009.
The man, Josef Fritzl, is being moved from a special prison to a regular one in Austria. This was decided by a court in Krems. The decision means that the 88-year-old man, who is sick with dementia, might be released from his lifelong punishment soon. His lawyer, Astrid Wagner, says he is very moved by the court’s decision and thinks it’s an important first step. She plans to ask for his complete release next year.
The decision was made after a long talk in court, where Fritzl said he regrets what he did. He was almost crying. The court decided that he is not dangerous anymore. But the decision will only become final after it’s confirmed by a higher court, which should happen in one to two weeks.
