UK Nightlife Economy Shifts Amid Cost-of-Living Crisis

Once upon a time, going out to a nightclub after a night of heavy drinking and dancing was a common occurrence for students. However, the current cost-of-living crisis in the UK has led to the closure of many nightclubs, including Pryzm and Atik clubs. Despite this, young people still have money for what Sacha Lord, founder of Parklife festival and club owner, calls the “big moments,” such as music festivals and concerts. In fact, Glastonbury Festival tickets sold out in less than an hour, despite their high price. According to Lord, young people are cutting back on mid-week nights out in order to save money for these special events. He believes that people are going out less frequently, but they are being more selective about the events they attend. In addition, the closure of student nights suggests that young people are feeling the effects of the cost-of-living crisis and are instead opting for house parties. Lord predicts that there will be more closures in the hospitality sector in the coming months. However, businessman John O’Donoghue is investing in the nightclub industry and believes that people still want to go out and have a good time, despite the challenges of rising food and energy prices. He plans to open a branch of his Home nightclub in Leeds, which will include a restaurant on the ground floor and a club environment downstairs. Students in Leeds have mixed feelings about going out to bars and clubs due to the high cost of drinks and the lack of variety in music. Many students are choosing to save their money for festivals instead. Overall, young people are going out less frequently but are still willing to spend money on special events and experiences.
