Police have confirmed that the dogs that attacked and killed 68-year-old Esther Martin in Essex were XL bullies. Ms. Martin was visiting her grandson when the attack occurred. The dogs were destroyed and post-mortem examinations confirmed that they were XL bullies. A man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous dog offences and released on police bail. Ms. Martin’s family had raised concerns about the conditions the animals were kept in.

XL bully is not a breed of dog itself, but a sub-category of the American bully. Essex Police brought in an expert to examine the dogs’ physical features to determine their breed. XL bullies are the largest kind of American bully dog and are described by the government as having a muscular body and blocky head, suggesting great strength and power for their size. In England and Wales, XL bullies have been added to the list of dogs banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.

Owners of XL bullies can no longer apply for a Certificate of Exemption, which allows them to keep their dogs. Owners without a certificate should contact their local police force. Dogs covered by a certificate must be kept on a lead and muzzled in public. Scotland has also announced a ban on XL bullies.
