Sir Paul McCartney has been reunited with his stolen bass guitar, which he used to play on Beatles hits such as Love Me Do and She Loves You. The Höfner bass was found in the attic of a man in Sussex after a search by a project called the Lost Bass. The guitar was stolen from the back of a van in London in 1972. Sir Paul had bought the guitar in 1961 and was “incredibly grateful” for its return. The bass was used on Love Me Do and She Loves You.

The Lost Bass search project appealed for information and a man in Sussex came forward, saying he had an old bass guitar in his attic. The guitar was returned to Sir Paul in December and has been authenticated by Höfner. The Lost Bass team said they were thrilled to solve the case and described it as “the greatest mystery in the history of rock and roll”. The guitar will need some repairs to make it playable again.

The team received tip-offs about the theft and found that it was sold to a pub landlord before ending up in the man’s attic in Sussex. People came forward to help because they wanted to support Sir Paul. The guitar was originally purchased for £30 in Germany in 1961 and its value is estimated to be more than the most expensive guitar ever sold.
