A partially-sighted penguin at Birdworld in Farnham, Surrey has found a “guide bird” in one of her friends. The penguin, named Squid, developed cataracts as a chick. Her friend, named Penguin, helps Squid navigate their enclosure and find food when she gets disorientated. The two penguins developed this friendship from a young age and Squid has learned to follow Penguin at feeding time.

Penguin was very sick at birth and was not expected to live. He did not join his group until later in life when he was better. Because he was so sick, he had to be hand-reared and had to learn how to be a penguin. As a result, he struggled to fit in. Eventually, he became friends with Squid and the two have been helping each other since.

While the penguins are not yet mature, penguins tend to pair for life. It is unclear whether Squid and Penguin will become a pair themselves, but they are compatible as friends.
