Sony Music Group has reportedly paid at least $600 million for half of Michael Jackson’s catalogue, making his musical assets worth over $1.2 billion. Jackson, who is one of the most successful pop stars of all time, has sold over 400 million records worldwide. His 1982 album, Thriller, remains the best-selling record of all time. He also has a strong presence on streaming services, with nearly 40 million monthly listeners on Spotify. The deal includes not only Jackson’s own songs, but also tracks by other artists acquired by his publishing group. Selling back catalogues has become a lucrative business for artists, with Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan also making substantial deals. Sony Music Group and the Estate of Michael Jackson have been contacted for comment.

Michael Jackson’s nephew is set to play him in an upcoming biopic, which is expected to generate even more interest in the late singer’s music. Additionally, a jacket worn by Jackson sold for £250,000 at an auction. In other news, three of Jackson’s songs have been removed from streaming platforms. Bruce Springsteen recently sold his music rights for $500 million, and Bob Dylan sold his song rights to UMG for up to $450 million. Queen is also reportedly planning a similar deal.
