Abdul Shokoor Ezedi, the suspect in the Clapham chemical attack, may have died after going into the River Thames, according to the police. Ezedi has not been seen since the night of the attack on 31 January, when a corrosive substance was thrown over a mother and her two children. Police believe that Ezedi was last seen at Chelsea Bridge before potentially entering the water. However, no body has been found and it is uncertain if one will ever be recovered.
During a press conference, Metropolitan Police officers stated that Ezedi could be seen on CCTV walking towards the Thames for four miles, and his behavior changed once he reached Chelsea Bridge. He was observed leaning over the bridge railings before CCTV sightings stopped. Cmdr Jon Savell explained that after reviewing all available camera footage, they have not seen Ezedi leaving the bridge, leading to the working hypothesis that he went into the water.
Police believe that death is the most probable outcome if Ezedi went into the river. They have not found any evidence of him having contact with anyone else from the hours of CCTV footage they have analyzed. The most recent sighting of Ezedi was captured on CCTV crossing Chelsea Bridge at around 23:27 GMT on 31 January.
The police’s marine support unit will be conducting a search of the river, but experts have cautioned that it may take time for a body to surface if someone has gone in the water. A member of Ezedi’s family has been informed of the police’s hypothesis. Ezedi is wanted on suspicion of attempted murder for the chemical attack, and police have carried out raids in the Newcastle area at properties linked to him.
Ezedi is an Afghan refugee who arrived in the UK in 2016. He had his asylum claim rejected twice, but successfully appealed against the Home Office by claiming he had converted to Christianity. In 2018, Ezedi was convicted of two sexual offences but was allowed to stay in the UK because his crimes did not meet the threshold for deportation.
