Donald Trump has stated that he would “encourage” Russia to attack any Nato member that fails to pay its bills. At a rally, he mentioned a hypothetical situation where a Nato member was not meeting their financial obligations and came under attack from Moscow. Trump said he would not protect that nation and would instead encourage the aggressors to do as they please. The White House criticized these comments, calling them “appalling and unhinged”.

Trump has been critical of Nato and believes that the United States bears an excessive financial burden in guaranteeing the defense of other nations. Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, after Trump left office. He has expressed dissatisfaction with the amount of US money sent to Ukraine, which is not a Nato member. The US has provided Ukraine with over $44 billion in financial support since the invasion. However, Republicans in Congress have blocked all new funding, demanding stricter measures on immigration.

During the rally, Trump celebrated the rejection of President Biden’s proposals and criticized them as “disastrous”. The issues of funding for Ukraine and immigration have now been separated, allowing senators to debate the aid money separately.
